Abstract

This presentation will examine issues of "interpretation" in the exhibition of documentary heritage collections. In doing so it will focus on the new notions of relationality and some of the questions that resonate within LAC such as 'matters of fact' vs 'matters of concern'.

About the speaker

Cheryl, a museum consultant and adjunct researcher at the Banff Centre's Fine Arts Department, was the former head of Public Programs at both the Vancouver Art Gallery and Mendel Art Gallery for most of the past twenty years. She has also taught university courses on Critical Thinking for the Classroom and on interpretation. She obtained a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in 2004. Her dissertation was entitled: Between Authority and Autonomy: Critically Engaged Interpretation in the Art Museum. Prior to that Cheryl obtained an MA in Art History from Queen's University in 1990 and a BA Honors in Art History from the University of Saskatchewan.
