Dalhousie University launches mid-career Master of Information Management

New degree available principally by distance, beginning September 2008

The School of Information Management in the Faculty of Management welcomes applications from part-time students for Canada’s first Master of Information Management (MIM) program. The program is designed for professionals with information management responsibilities and at least five years’ work experience in the private or public sectors.

Why study for the MIM?

“The MIM is a degree whose time has come” (Canadian Deputy Minister). “Most managers are absolutely ignorant about their responsibilities around information management” (Canadian CEO) . The MIM program will complement students’ prior education and experience and support the crucial nature of their professional roles in managing the information and knowledge resource of their organizations for legal, ethical and organizational purposes.

Information management encompasses the entire process of strategically creating, defining, finding, analyzing, protecting, classifying and distributing information within an organization to facilitate situational understanding and decision-making. Information management includes the acquisition, control and disposal of information products, the application of theories and techniques of information science to create, modify or improve information handling systems and the provision of services to internal and external clients.

Technological support for online learning is provided by Dalhousie’s highly experienced team in the Centre for Advanced Management Education.

The MIM program offers interim certificates en route to graduation: Graduate Diploma in IM and Advanced Graduate Diploma in IM (after three and six courses respectively).

Please note that this is a limited enrolment program for mid-career professionals. Early applications are advised. Budgetary approval is pending.
